Review of Jouer Cosmetics

Categories: ,

It seems that every cosmetics company, from prestige brands to Markwins International's The Color Workshop, have released special edition gift sets or palettes for the holidays. The problem with gift sets or palettes is that while one might find a few shades she really likes, the rest of the shades go unused. That's why The Style Page prefers singles, and come to think about it, that's why she wasn't smittened with American Beauty cosmetics, as it offers eyeshadow duos only - see the posting on Beauty from Kohl's Department Stores.

Creme eyeshadows from Jouer

Jouer (pronounced "zhoo-ay", French for "to play") is a cosmetics line from film producer Christine Zilber and makeup artist Kerry Malouf. It features singles for face, lips, and eyes that can be attached together to create individualized palettes.

I took advantage of the 3-for-2 offer from the Lucky Breaks section of November 2004 issue of Lucky to try Jouer cosmetics. I selected lip gloss in Monsoon (a deep wine) and cream eye color in Cashmere, described as "khaki brown with shimmer" but really a shimmery taupe. As the freebie, I received lip gloss in Starfish, described as "luminous buff with shimmer" but it's so sheer, it's like applying clear shimmer.

Performance-wise, I liked all the Jouer products I received. The textures are indeed sheer but layerable, as the Jouer website says. The customized palette system is smart, but the white packaging would get dirty in a makeup kit. I would consider buying Jouer products again, even though the price ($18) for an individual color is too steep for my liking.

Jouer may be purchased directly from their website. The 3-for-2 offer from Lucky might still be valid - check the November issue to be sure. Also, Jouer is offering free shipping for purchases over $70 to registered users - you would have to buy a minimum of four colors to qualify.

Alternatively, Jouer may be purchased through Sephora.com. Sephora offers free shipping for purchases over $75, free gift packaging, and 3 free samples with purchase. Its web site offers an extensive selection of brands, and you can mix and match from its many brands to qualify for free shipping. You may also visit Sephora.com by clicking on the Sephora banners on any of the Beauty pages on The Style Page web site.

April 2005: What's New in Beauty - Webby nominees for Beauty sites announced

Categories: ,

The Cosmetic Site published an article Webby nominees for Beauty & Cosmetics listed. The Webby Awards recognizes the best in websites. This is the first year that beauty and cosmetic businesses can compete for the Webby awards. Among the nominees is the web site for Jouer Cosmetics. Jouer states that its colors work for all women, and to prove its claim, the web site features an interactive makeover with four women: a blonde, a Hispanic, an Asian, and a woman of African descent.

Jouer's interactive makeover

The Jouer Cosmetics website certainly deserves its Webby award nomination. The Style Page reviewed Jouer's products in its December 12, 2004 entry on this web log. Since that review, I've come to appreciate that I can apply Jouer's products on the run: a tiny mirror is included in the container and no implements are needed - just use your fingers. Right now, I'm wanting Jouer's Velvet (charcoal gray with shimmer) and Peridot (soft shimmering olive) cream eyeshadows.

Jouer relaunched ... for real!

Jouer relaunched

As followers of The Style Page blog know, I'm a fan of Jouer and its unique interlocking compacts. For months, I've been eagerly anticipating its relaunch. Now, finally, the wait is over. You can almost hear me breathe a sigh of relief.

Jouer has changed its packaging from white to a more glam black. Moreover, it has greatly expanded its product range to include lipstick, face products, and brushes.

Jouer's website still has the interactive makeovers featuring women of various ethnicities, for which it was nominated for a Webby Award. Visit http://www.jouercosmetics.com/ to play with the makeovers and view Jouer's new product range.

A Mary Kay beauty consultant questions my comments on the Webby awards site

The Style Page received this email from a Mary Kay beauty consultant concerning the comments on Jouer Cosmetics's web site that I entered on the Webby Awards web site:

"I saw your comment on your webby nomination. Just out of curiosity, why didn't you say those exact same things about the Mary Kay site? Did you check it out and compare? You should. Thanks."

To which I wrote back:

"I am very impressed by the interactive makeover tools that the Mary Kay company provides to its beauty advisors.

I voted for the Jouer Cosmetics site, as its side-by-side makeovers for women of different complexions demonstrate Jouer's claim that its colors work for all women. I also use Jouer Cosmetics - I like the product and both the concept and execution of its customizable palette. For more, please visit my blog entry, April 2005: What's New in Beauty - Webby nominees for Beauty sites announced."

Direct sales is not my favorite way of purchasing cosmetics or any other products, for that matter. The Style Page lists only the corporate site for direct sales companies such as Mary Kay and Avon, and will not list web site for individual sales consultants.

At last ...

Beauty companies have us salivating about products long before those products actually hit the stores.

Kaleidoscope Eye Kit from Le Metier de Beaute
The Style Page is obsessed with eye shadow palettes!

I've written about Le Metier de Beaute several times, after its lip glosses were featured in InStyle. The full line became available from Needless Markup in May of this year.

I've raved about Jouer even more times: in fact, I'm wearing its Peridot cream eyeshadow today. After Jouer's fire sale (60% off) on HauteLook.com, I began to question if it was still in business. For months now, Jouer's website has had a placeholder for an upcoming "Custom Luxury Collection." Now, at last, the Custom Luxury Collection will debut at NYC's Henri Bendel store on Fifth Avenue on August 7. I hope that online shopping will be available in the very near future - the tease has gone on too long!

Review of Jouer Les Essentials d'été Summer 2006 Limited Edition Value Set

Categories: ,

Since my June 23 posting on Jouer Les Essentials d'été Summer 2006 Limited Edition Value Set, I've purchased the set.

Essential Matte Touch does the job of preventing breakthrough shine on my nose. I wear it under the i.d. Bare Escentuals mineral powder foundation.

The Essential Lip Enhancer is another matter. The user is directed to apply it 3 times a day for 29 days to see a difference. It is different from other lip plumpers like DuWop Lip Venom Lite Spicy Lip Gloss, Half Strength, Clear, which includes essential oil of cinammon to create a burning sensation for the lips to appear bigger. Jouer's Essential Lip Enhancer creates a vague sense of numbness upon application and dries to a finish that reminded me of Revlon's anti-feathering treatment sticks. The jury is still out on this one.

Jouer Les Essentials d'été Summer 2006 Limited Edition Value Set

I posted a positive review of Jouer Cosmetics in December 2004. I particularly like Jouer's unique customizable palettes which allows you to connect individual containers together side-by-side and back-to-back. These cosmetics are designed to be applied with the fingertips - no fuss makeup application for the warmer months.

I'm looking forward to trying its Les Essentials d'été Summer 2006 Limited Edition Value Set, which features Essential Lip Enhancer (admittedly, I am skeptical of lip plumpers) and Essential Matte Touch (I get unwanted breakthrough shine on my nose, so I'd like to see if this is effective). Purchased separately, the Essential Lip Enhancer costs $14 and the Essential Matte Touch costs $24. The set costs $28.00 - a savings of $10.

Friday roundup - February 15, 2008

Here are articles from Friends (listed on my blogroll) that caught my eye:

Makeup artist Christoper Drummond sets aside blogging on beauty to share how a chance encounter made him count his blessings.

Christopher

Ondo Lady blogs on the book Top Tips for Girls, which sounds kind of like Hints from Heloise.

Sarah Bellum of The Beauty Brains blogs on the truly weird: Realdolls, which are life-size, anatomically correct dolls with interchangeable features such as faces and tongues (tell Gene Simmons), and the men who love them.

I make no bones about the fact that I'm a fan of Paula Begoun. If that makes me an "aging conservative," so be it. In spite of that, or perhaps because of that, I love the name of this blog: If Blue Eyeshadow's Illegal, I Should Be In Prison.

Lastly, Mischo Beauty, a fellow resident of the DC Metro area, has had the very pricy ($250) Natura Bisse Diamond Cream on her wish list and asks, What's on your beauty "wish list"?

Oh My! Blush: too cute

Here's what's on my list:

  • Oh My! Blush from French company Arcancil: I'm not into girly girl, but I love the compact and fluffy puff. Anyone going to France soon?

  • The launch of Le Métier de Beauté: the lip colors and eye shadows look beautiful.

  • The launch of the custom luxury collection, whatever that's supposed to be, from Jouer. I've been a big fan of Jouer (see my past posts) and its interlocking palettes that enable one to customize their palettes.

  • World Girl eye shadow palette in Rosetta Stone from MakeupMania - the Pomegranate Wine shade is tantalizing. MakeupMania has been online for ten years, and its look hasn't changed significantly over that time. It's still fun to browse for unusual products such as mascara in a squeeze tube (of the kind used for dispensing ointment) and inexpensive cosmetics from La Femme.

  • SAÚDE PELE luminizer from Christopher's eponymous makeup line Christopher Drummond Beauty, another projected launch.
Sigh. How long will these companies tease us with projected launches?

Shop Etc. - Shop Talk - Fall Preview: Stila Fall in Love Eye Shadow Trios

Categories: ,

Fall In Love Eye Shadow Trio in Forest Clove

I want the eye shadow trio in Forest Clove (pictured above), which features shades of shimmery gold, olive, deep brown olive. Available from Sephora.com.

I'm obsessed with olive green eyeshadow (see my profile). Other good eyeshadow trios featuring olive shades are MAXeye Shadow in Baja Bronze from Max Factor (the colors - a yellow matte, a tan "British khaki" matte, and a shimmery olive do not display accurately at all) and Vital Radiance Soft Dimension Powder Shadow in Fresh Meadows.

As a single, I like jouer Eye Compact Eye Shadow, Peridot, described as a "shimmering olive".
NOTE: Sephora.com is discontinuing Jouer, along with Beauty Buffet, Diane von Furstenburg Beauty, Girlactik, Passport, Pinkie Swear, and She She. Shop now to stock up.
While olive green is complemented by golden or yellow shades, I've also used Joe Blasco Eye Shadow in Green Genie, available from makeupmania.com.

Rock and Republic gets into color cosmetics

This has to be the busiest season for cosmetics launches that I've seen in the four years that I've been blogging here at The Style Page. I've already covered the debut of pixi by Petra Strand, NP Set, and JK Jemma Kidd at Target; the launch of Victoria Jackson's direct sales line (the third cosmetics line she's founded) and the re-launch of Jouer.

Rock and Republic, best known for its premium denim, will enter the already crowded field of color cosmetics with an ultra-luxe line. Here are some previews of Rock and Republic cosmetics products:

Luxe Lip Gloss in Alpha Blonde

Luxe Lip Gloss, which is enriched with Vitamins A and E, provides a high-gloss finish.

Bound Gel Eye Liner in Torture

Ouch. This sounds rather kinky. Bound Gel Eye Liner is a highly pigmented, long-wearing gel/cream eye liner.

Accentuate Bronzer/Highlighter

The Accentate Bronzer/Highlighter collection costs $225.00. Yes - you read that right - two hundred twenty-five dollars. This refillable compact is studded with Swarovski crystals, and the collection also includes a kabuki brush and drawstring pouches for the compact and brush.

The matte bronzer is paired with one of three shimmer highlighter shades: coral, rose, and gold. Refills are $45.00.

Rock & Republic Cosmetics will debut September 15th at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale’s. To find out more about Rock & Republic cosmetics, visit RockandRepublicCosmetics.com

Michael Graves cosmetic pencil sharpener

I am a sucker for standout packaging, although I know that packaging often costs more than the product itself.  Examples of standout packaging are:

This pod is actually a cosmetic pencil sharpener. Designed by famed product designer Michael Graves, it features dual German stainless steel blades - you know that the Germans always make good stuff! :-)

For stylish kitchen, beauty, home and office, and safety and industrial implements, visit Slice™. Besides Michael Graves, featured designers are the pink-suited Karim Rashid, Yves Behar, Scot Herbst, and Alfredo Muccino.
